It is recommended you allow comments on the overall budget to cover items and suggestions which cross multiple categories (agriculture, taxes, transportation, etc.)

Good Morning Senator Roemer,
I would like to make a quick comment about our taxing systems.
It seems to me that our systems of collecting taxes in this state and in the nation are inherently unfair.
I have lived in other countries where they take different approaches in financing government operations.
The fairest system it appears to me to be the value added tax on all goods and services. Basically every time a service or product passes through a new stage of value added, there is a small incremental tax being paid by the recipient, representing their share of the tax burden. Therefore every citizen shares in the tax responsibility.
It affects the rich and the poor equally by the fact of their purchasing power. Industries pay taxes only for their products materials purchased prior to production. This levels the tax table for all manufacturing in comparison to private citizens.
Everyone can view their tax in the same perspective which takes the political competition for special tax considerations out of the picture.
My point is, maybe instead of trying to patch our system to make it work, maybe we should look at what is the best fairest way for business and citizens to be taxed on equal levels In this way our governmental services can be financed without anyone or any business to avoid their share of the responsibility for the well being of society as a whole.

I appreciate the opportunity to provide input on these issues; we can only assume comments provided will be given serious consideration as there are many “lay” people offering excellent suggestions.

This is a great opportunity for Minnesotans to express their feelings and to make recommendations on how to fix our state’s economy. Several comments:
- I find the low use-level of this forum sad and indicative of the people’s general apathy regarding government.
- It would be interesting to see if this site is actually being visited by our state representatives and what, if any, changes to their thinking have occurred and do they find it useful? There should be more interaction between state reps and forum users.
- It should be mandatory for state reps and senators to sign in as such on this forum when they do post.

It would be easier to sort through this stuff if you had the program/item on one line with the amount budgeted. Doing this would make it easier to look at each item with the amount next to it. All these charts are nice, but, get very confusing. It’s like reading the Obama give-a-ways.
Sincerely,
Jim

I would like to make a suggestion. Why don’t we triple the tax on fast foods. The Burger Kings, the McDonalds, the Sonic, the Hardees, the Arby’s etc. I think this would reduce our costs for medical and give us a healthy income so we don’t have to eliminate neccesary needs from the poor. I have a younger brother that recently died from ALS, a sister with Lupus, and a nephew with CFS. 2 of us siblings have had to cover the majority of expenses which have almost branckrupted us. One thing we should not cut is medical for anyone. Linda
